Politician, the MP of the European Parliament, the president of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the European Parliament.
Since 1970’s he made scientific researches on the European Community at the University of Lodz. In 1980 he became a member of the “Solidarnosc”, at the end of this decade – director of the Center for European Studies of the University of Lodz. 1991-96 served as a governmental commissioner for the European integration.

In the years 2000-2001 he was a secretary of the Committee for European Integration and the president of the Office of the Committee for European Integration. He played an important role while the negotiations over the Treaty of Nice in December 2000. On 13 June 2004 elected for the Member of the European Parliament post; between 20 July 2004 and 16 January 2007 he was the vice-speaker of the Parliament from the EPP-ED party (European People’s Party-European Democrats). In January 2007 chosen as the president of the Foreign Affairs Commission.

Also, he holds the functions of the director of the European Union Institute in the Collegium Civitas, the president of the European Center Natolin and of the Foundation of European Board; the member of the Euro-Atlantic Association.
